If like me, you’re obsessed with Reels, you might well be wondering about the Instagram Reels dimensions? I know I did… But I’ve worked it out (so you don’t have to!) But first up, let’s talk a little bit about Instagram Reels and why they are so marvelous for your business.
1. What are Instagram Reels?
Reels are Instagrams answer to TikTok and for many people who already have an established audience on Instagram, it’s the obvious choice to scratch that itch. But this short form video content is on the rise and a great opportunity for businesses to get involved and get great reach in a fun and interesting way.
2. Why should I use Instagram Reels for my business?
It’s well known that when a social media platform launches a new feature, they reward early adopters with increased reach on the feature as a way of saying thanks. Don’t we all wish we’d got into YouTube early?!
Reels are the perfect length for sharing short, sharp tips… You don’t even have to speak or show your face! Which is great if you don’t like being on camera. Take a look at my reels grid here for how I use them in my business.
3. What are the Instagram Reels dimensions?
Reels are the same dimensions as Instagram Stories, 1920px high by 1080 px wide… So you’re going to want to shoot vertically.
When it comes to posting a Reel you can simply post it onto the Reel explore page, where it will also show in your Reels grid feed in full size.
You can also choose to share to Stories… No issues there then, as it’s exactly the same dimensions.
But where people get stuck is when they share a preview to their main feed. Because then the Reel itself gets cropped, but so does the cover you selected to use.
Personally, I don’t ensure every little bit of text lands in the Reel safe zone, but you’ll certainly want to stay clear of putting any key messages of framing anything important in those areas.

Also, if you want these to stay in your main grid, you may well want to create a Reels cover that will look good on both your Reels grid and main grid… I totally get that!
So, here’s an Instagram Reels Cover Dimensions Safe Zone for that:
